February 05 Play the Blood Typing GameSome genes show co-dominance and are both strongly expressed in the phenotype of an individual. The human ABO blood group system is a prime example of this co-dominance. It is important the a person who needs blood receives the right type because of the presence of antigens (chemical fragments on the surface of cells that permit cell to cell recognition) on the surface of the red blood cells. If the wrong blood is given to someone they could die.
Here is your chance to prove your worth as a prospective medical practitioner. Save the lives of the people in this accident by giving them the correct blood.

January 18 Bananas Have SeedsYes bananas do have seeds. The fruit that we commonly buy in the supermarket is actually sterile and propagated asexually so it does not have any visible seeds. No those little bown specks are not the seeds. However, banana seeds in nature can actually be quite large.

Pathway of Sperm Release How Do Fibre Optics Transmit LightDuring an Integrated Science class today a student asked this question. Here is a link that will supply the answer. Knowledge is power! Fibre Optics And Light January 03 Countercurrent exchange in fishCherise asked for some help in explaining the countercurrent mechanism of venitlation in bony fish. As a fish swims a current is generated in the OPPOSITE direction to that in which the fish is moving. Somewhat like the aerodynamics over a moving car. As water is taken into the mouth of the fish it flows over the gills in the manner described above. Now the blood in the circulatory system of the fish in order to be reoxygenated must flow back to the gills. This happens to be in the same direction therefore in which the fish is swimming. Deoxygenated blood returning to the gills encounters oxygenated water passing over the gills. There is therefore a very large concentration gradient and oxygen diffuses out of the water and into the blood. This is why the blood becomes increasingly oxygenated as the water loses its oxygen content. I will attach an animation of this exchange of oxygen. Countercurrent ventilation Happy New YearHello Students, It is a New Year 2007 and I want to wish you all the best that this year has to offer. It may be quite windy. We may be investigating rock pools if the tide is amenable so you can INCLUDE a pair of slippers in addtion to the SNEAKERS being worn on your feet. The slippers should be placed in your bag in the event that they are needed. Some reading on soil conservation Mangement of Soil Erosion by Libby Y. Field November 23 Flowers Just Get the Job Done!No questions asked...flowers are efficient at getting the job done.
Look at several types of insect and wind pollinated flowers to get a better idea of how flowers even mimic other animals and trick others into thinking so...
Development of the Wild CucumberI found another interesting site where someone looked at the development of the wild cucumber from flower to fruit. Notice the separate male and female flowers -another adaptation plants have.
Also notice in this flower that the ovary is below the corolla instead of above it and is called an inferior ovary. This is the same reason why the english apple has sepals at one end and a stalk at the other. The Guava is another fruit that has an inferior ovary, thus the remains of the calyx at the base of the fruit and a stalk at the other.
November 22 Get to know fruit betterOk 5th years, we are looking at fruit development and structure. This website should prove a valuable tool in identfying the structures of many of our own local varieties.
