Fibre Optics And Light 1月3日 Countercurrent exchange in fishCherise asked for some help in explaining the countercurrent mechanism of venitlation in bony fish. As a fish swims a current is generated in the OPPOSITE direction to that in which the fish is moving. Somewhat like the aerodynamics over a moving car. As water is taken into the mouth of the fish it flows over the gills in the manner described above. Now the blood in the circulatory system of the fish in order to be reoxygenated must flow back to the gills. This happens to be in the same direction therefore in which the fish is swimming. Deoxygenated blood returning to the gills encounters oxygenated water passing over the gills. There is therefore a very large concentration gradient and oxygen diffuses out of the water and into the blood. This is why the blood becomes increasingly oxygenated as the water loses its oxygen content. I will attach an animation of this exchange of oxygen. Countercurrent ventilation Happy New YearHello Students, It is a New Year 2007 and I want to wish you all the best that this year has to offer.
